This week I had the opportunity to submit testimony in support of MD HB 863. Maryland House Bill 863 is a tool to give victims and their families a voice when justice is delayed or denied in the state of Maryland .
In 1986 my mother was not aware of how laws worked in Maryland. Her ignorance was used against her by the Montgomery County Maryland state attorney at the time, Montgomery County Police Department, and the Attorney General. She did not know that she had 60 days to challenge my brother Keith Warrens death certificate provided by the Maryland medical examiners office. Currently the law on the books is that the family of a loved one has only 60 days to question the ruling of the manner of death of their loved one as stated on the death certificate .
There is no way in two months anyone can effectively challenge a death certificate, when in fact, the police can hold up a police report like they did with my mother, when the medical examiners office can delay getting the corners report to them like they did to my mother when you have police collecting/ destroying evidence and manipulating documents as they did in my brothers case.
I have sounded the alarm and will keep ringing the bell to help others understand how certain laws and ruling can derail your daily existence and throw it in a downward spiral. #KnowYourRights understand the laws and be apart of the change before the change that you should be apart of will tear apart your life as you know it.
