KNOW YOUR RIGHTS-STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS

In 1986 my mom wasn’t verse on the law and Montgomery County Maryland took advantage of her lack of knowledge and used it against her. The only legal recourse in 1986 for my mom to get justice in the death of Keith had a statute of limitations of 3yrs. The lawyer my mother retained filed the lawsuit against the county 3 yrs and 5 months after the statute. The short version of the long story is that my mother filed a complaint with the Office of the Bar Counsel against the lawyer and won the compliant. The Office of the Bar Counsel found the following:

“We find that you violated DR 6-101(A) (3) and DR 7-101 (A) (3) when you filed the complaint on Ms. Couey’s behalf…..Nevertheless, you filed the complaint approximately 5 months after the expiration of the applicable statutory period, resulting in a dismissal of Ms.
Couey’s case.”

In short…. The county and the state stacked the deck against my mom and made her play the hand she was dealt by a corrupt system that takes no mercy on those who dont have the financial backing or support in seeking justice and accountability.

Statute of Limitations

What Is the Statute of Limitations?

“A statute of limitations is a law that sets the maximum time the parties involved have to initiate legal proceedings from the date of an alleged offense, whether civil or criminal. However, the length of time the statute allows for a victim to bring legal action against the suspected wrong-doer can vary from one jurisdiction to another.
